Dental implants from A to Z - here's everything you absolutely need to know

Understanding the essential information about dental implants is fundamental for a patient, because he will be able to know the basics of implantology and understand how important and decisive the implants are for oral health in general and for chewing and smiling in particular.

Through a series of questions, therefore, we want to answer what are the most frequent requests of patients when they inquire about the possibility of having one or more dental implants.

What are dental implants?

One of the first questions is this:  What is meant by dental implant? Natural teeth are fixed to the jaw bone thanks to the root. In order to replace a fallen tooth, therefore, we need a new root, which keeps it firmly fixed to the jaw.

The dental implant is this new root: A biocompatible titanium hollow screw inserted into the maxillary bone, on which a dental crown will then be placed.

Can multiple dental implants be placed?

If you have lost two teeth that are well apart from each other – for example, one molar in the upper and one in the lower dental arch – you will need 2 implants.

If, on the other hand, you have lost several teeth, you can choose the All on 6 or All on 8 implantology: These are 6 or 8 dental implants on which the dental crowns are positioned.

Can Anyone Have Dental Implants?

The only factor to consider is bone density. When you lose your teeth, the jaw bone is no longer stimulated by chewing, so it slowly begins to reabsorb, becoming thinner and thinner.

In this case, a bone graft is needed before the dental implant can be inserted, otherwise the titanium screw, the new root, would have no space if the jaw bone has a thin thickness.

Are dental implants different from bridges and dentures?

Absolutely yes! Bridges and dentures are mobile prostheses, above all they are not even very stable and need continuous maintenance. But the main problem is the ability to remove bridges and dentures.

A dental implant with a fixed prosthesis, on the other hand, replaces your lost tooth 100%. You will then have a fixed, stable tooth anchored to the jaw, with your natural gum. Nobody will prune the difference.

Is it possible to be allergic to dental implants?

No, because the implants are made of pure titanium, which is biocompatible and integrates perfectly with the bone.

Do dental implants fit under anaesthesia?

Yes, local anaesthesia will be administered, but more powerful than the usual one for dental caries or root canal treatments. You will feel absolutely no pain or discomfort and the effect will last for a few days.

How long does it take to insert a dental implant?

This is an operation you will do in the dental office – it only lasts longer than normal dental procedures. But the implant is placed with only one dentist appointment. Then it is necessary to wait for osseointegration before placing the fixed crown.

Is the maintenance of dental implants complicated?

The dental implant is your new root: you just have to take care of the normal oral hygiene of the teeth, brush them every day after meals, floss and do a thorough cleaning of the teeth at the dentist 2 times a year.

By following these tips, your teeth will always be clean and the bacteria will not create problems for your natural teeth and gums.

Can I eat any food with dental implants?

Certainly, just like before. It is with bridges and dentures that problems can arise for some hard food, but with implants and zirconium crowns you have no limitations.
